About Us

Hello and thank you for visiting our web site.  We hope you enjoy reading about us and how we contribute to seniors and families in the community.

Our History

Greater Edmonton Foundation was created in 1959 under provincial legislation called The Homes for the Aged Act.  Back in the 1960s the government of the day wanted to build retirement homes through out Alberta called lodges for low income seniors.  The Province began building seniors lodges in the early 1960s and in Edmonton this continued until 1984.

An agreement was made between the City of Edmonton and the Province of Alberta stating that the City would contribute the land and the province would construct the lodge.  To facilitate the administration of lodges, Foundations were established to serve one or more municipal districts, counties or improvement districts. Each city, town, and village contained within the foundation’s boundary had the option of becoming a contracting municipality to the Foundation.  Any annual operating deficit then became the responsibility of that municipality. read more
