Crime Free Multi-Housing Program of Edmonton
Keeping Illegal Activity Out of Rental Property

In 2000, the Greater Edmonton Foundation (GEF): Housing for Seniors joined the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program. Developed in 1999, the Crime-Free Multi Housing Program, sponsored by the Edmonton Police Service and the Alberta Residential Rental Association, is a program aimed at increasing crime prevention awareness and building security. The goal is to educate managers and tenants about crime prevention techniques to reduce the likelihood of criminal activity on the premises. By implementing these practices, many benefits can result, such as, lower maintenance and repair costs, improved personal safety, and peace of mind.

A major concern with seniors residences is security; with reduced mobility and the need for more assistance, seniors are more vulnerable towards crime and security issues. Even a simple act of charity, such as accepting a generous offer to help a senior into their building, could turn into a risky decision. With the implementation of the Crime-Free Multi Housing Program, GEF has seen a significant drop in crime at their facilities and an increase in the residents sense of pride in being in a secure location they can trust.

In addition to joining the program, GEF has 24-hour video surveillance at their buildings, giving the residents a higher level of security.
