Did you know that in 20 short years the number of senior citizens living in Alberta will double? It’s the fastest growing demographic in the world actually. Will you be a senior in 10 years or do you know someone who will be?

Right now Greater Edmonton Foundation, a non profit provider of seniors’ housing, has nearly 500 senior citizens waiting to live in our housing and the wait list gets longer and longer each and every day. These are people who are planning for their future, they know they will need more support as they age and they are looking to the Foundation for help. The lack of affordable housing coupled with the recession and decline in people’s investments along with the growing number of people who are approaching retirement age means Greater Edmonton Foundation will have more people applying for our housing than ever before.

Tax Benefits of Giving

To encourage and support charitable giving, the Alberta Government has increased its charitable tax credit. When combined with the Federal credit, Albertans will receive a 50% non-refundable tax credit for every dollar donated over the $200 annual threshold. This increase gives Albertans one of the highest charitable tax credits in Canada. The following example illustrates how the Alberta charitable tax credit combines with the Federal tax credit to provide the optimum benefit to Alberta taxpayers and the charities they support.
